We chose HP Elite Folio, a 13.5-inch 2-in-1 device because it shows how Windows laptops are evolving in response to the arm1 MacBook based on Apple's arm. Elite folio runs Windows on ARM on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G platform, which includes both 4GLTE and 5G modems, along with Wi-Fi 6. The message is that this ultraportable (1.3 kg) 2-in-1 is "always on, always connected", with a claimed battery life of up to 24.5 hours of "local video playback."

 With the optional proven display specificity of the touch screen, an elite thin active stylus (with storage and charging on the device), a well-defined audio-video subsystem, and fanless operation, this is the desired laptop for high-heeled mobile professionals.

The ARM-based processor elite folio certainly delivers on battery life (a ZDNet review recorded a battery life of about 15 hours with versatile workloads), but there is a trade-off in that Windows 10 on ARM (UWA) can currently only run 32-bit Windows applications. Intel x64 emulation is coming to WAA, however, and is now available via the Windows Insider Program. ARM64-native applications also appear, the teams include Microsoft and edge, Adobe Photoshop, and Lightroom.

The pros:

  • 2-in-1 model
  • LTE connection option
  • Privacy screen option
  • Pen included

Cons::

  • Can only run 32-bit Windows applications
