The Surface Pro is a tablet with a keyboard cover type accessory (not included in the base price) that turns it into a laptop of some kind. It's not a laptop that you can comfortably use-or at all-on your lap, thanks to the kickstand that keeps the screen section upright, but it's light, flexible and an excellent option if you do a lot of touchscreen tasks-drawing, handwritten notes and annotation, for example-as well as mainstream cognitive work. Note that, as with the type cover, the Surface Pen is another option at an additional cost.

There are two variants of the 12.3-inch Surface Pro: the consumer-focused Surface Pro 7, which is based on generation 10 Intel Core processors, and the business-oriented Surface Pro 7+, which runs on the latest generation 11 core CPUs and also offers LTE mobile broadband. We are looking at the latter here.

Service Pro 7+ starts with a Wi-Fi version only with a Core i3 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of RAM. The Core i5 configuration is also available with 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of direct access memory, Wi-Fi and LTE, while the high-end model features 7 and 32 GB of basic RAM and 1 TB of direct access memory.

The Surface Pro 7 + has a slightly larger battery than the consumer stablet, resulting in a claimed battery life of 15 hours with Wi-Fi only and 13.5 hours with Wi-Fi and LTE. The other main difference is security and Management: Pro 7 + has a removable SSD, support for Windows Autopilot and comes with the main security features turned on by default.

Microsoft recently released the Surface Pro 8, with upgrades including a 13-inch screen, better battery life (up to 16 hours claimed), improved keyboard cover type, two USB-si/Thunderbolt 4 ports and a slimmer stylus with tactile feedback and wireless charging.

The original reason for the Surface brand was for Microsoft to showcase new factors and technologies that its OEM partners could use as inspiration for their designs. That definitely worked with the Surface Pro style "tablet first" 2 in 1, and you'll find a lot of variations on the theme from the likes of Lenovo, HP, Dell and others.

The pros:

  • WiFi and LTE connection options
  • Drivers
  • Ideal for travel

Cons::

  • Type of additional cost coverage
  • Inconvenient to use in the lap
